We set out to make a difference.

In the beginning, we set out to make a difference. We wanted to enrich lives through real estate. We started with the desire to fix something, do something better, do something that matters — raw, pure, and good-intentioned. We wanted to be a part of something special.

Then something happened along the way.

We began to challenge our own beliefs, starting with: "Is there a different way to look at this?" Is there a better way to help people and our organization come together and thrive? This led to more and more questions — a domino effect — and soon we found ourselves in fields of study previously off limits to the real estate industry. Fields that explored the mysteries of communication we'd written off as unteachable.

Here is the biggest thing we learned: there is something greater at play in real estate sales and leadership. When we focus on the most important values — passion, vulnerability, authenticity, connectedness, and storytelling — everything falls into place, and our people thrive at the highest level.

8 questions to ask before you switch brokerages.

We don't believe every agent should switch. In fact, we've written extensively about agents who move from broker to broker chasing greener pastures. Every circumstance is different — but if you're seriously considering a change, be honest with yourself first.

Are the 3 basic needs being met?

Training, support, and recognition. Most organizations have training — but are you really taking advantage of it? Support from your broker doesn't feel valuable until you realize you don't have it. Feeling valued frees you to spend less energy defending your worth and more energy creating it.

Have you voiced how you feel?

Have you given your current company the opportunity to adjust? A good broker will address your needs. Most issues can be resolved — though some require more time. Make sure any promised changes come with a timeline.

Are you an agent or a recurring payment?

Every firm has a different model. The question is — are they more interested in you subscribing to their monthly services, or genuinely interested in your success? There's no clear-cut answer. Trust your gut.

Has your personal brand exceeded the firm?

Companies don't sell properties. Agents do. When your contribution exceeds the benefits of being there, the relationship is no longer mutually beneficial. That's when it's time to go.

Have you stopped learning?

It's great to be a leader — but make sure nobody turns you into an unpaid manager. Top producers are most effective and most profitable when they're face to face with clients.

Will your broker pay full commissions on exit?

Look through your independent contractor agreement. Many state the broker takes a higher split after you leave. If they agree to honor your normal splits upon departure — get it in writing.

Is your switch strategic or is your ego being stroked?

Praise has a dark side. If you're being richly recognized somewhere new, ask whether that recognition comes with invisible strings attached. Disingenuous praise always has a price tag.

Does the new brokerage embody the lifestyle you want?

The organization you work for reflects its leadership. Are they living the lifestyle you want? Don't listen to what people say. Listen to what they do.
